Seoul National University Museum of Art presents a special
exhibition 《Deep into Abstraction - On the Way》 on view through September 14.
This exhibition emphasizes that abstraction
is no longer confined to a lofty play of detached ideas, but is instead deeply
entangled with society, community, the body, and the senses. According to
Merleau-Ponty, our perception connects to the world through the body, and art
deepens that connection. Just like sensory experience, the experience of
liberation is also tied to the secular world.

Sim Sang Yong, Director of the Seoul
National University Museum of Art, writes in the preface, “Abstraction is not
the negation of the visible, but an attempt not to be imprisoned by it.” He
adds, “This is why perception that arises from the heart of the secular world
that constantly entangles us becomes an even more urgent demand of abstract
aesthetics.”

As stated in the preface, “All abstract art
is a sensuous attempt to grasp truth and goodness in the space between the
world and what lies beyond,” this exhibition explores the concrete
possibilities of contemporary abstraction through the works of 17 contemporary
artists spanning painting, photography, and installation.
