HITE Collection presents its 2025 spring exhibition 《The figurative is not the exception but the rule》 on view through July 26.

This exhibition challenges the persistent assumption—even in the 21st century, after countless discourses on painting—that figuration is merely a representational residue. Instead, it asserts that figuration is not a remnant of representation but a condition for the emergence of sensation, a necessary passage through which painting activates sensory experience.

The participating artists do not approach figuration merely as the depiction of a person or an object’s appearance. Instead, they present it as a clue to fragmented memory, as a boundary where language and the body intersect, and as a signifier of objectified emotions. Through their paintings, they seek to demonstrate that figuration is not the finalized form of an image, but rather a structure and an event—one that composes sensation and evokes unease.
