The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) is presenting its Opening Special Exhibition, 《Storage Story》, at the Photography Seoul Museum of Art (Photo SeMA) through October 12.

《Storage Story》 is an exhibition that captures the construction process of the newly established Photo SeMA through the diverse perspectives of six contemporary artists. Centered on the photographic medium, the exhibition explores the meaning and raison d'être of the museum from multiple angles.

In this exhibition, six artists actively working through photography—Won Seoung Won, Dongsin Seo, Oh Jooyoung, Melmel Chung, Jihyun Jung, and Joo Yongseong—present commissioned works that experiment with the evolving and expanding nature of contemporary photographic media. Utilizing their distinct perspectives and sensibilities, they navigate between photography’s documentary characteristics and artistic reinterpretation, all centered on the theme of building Photo SeMA.

The works, closely tied to concepts such as the space and architecture of the Photography Seoul Museum of Art, its archives and history, and the notions of place and memory, reframe the museum not simply as a venue for exhibitions, but as a site of preservation, a site of creation, and a site of memory. Through this, the exhibition offers a new kind of experience in which space and artwork are organically interconnected, expanding the meaning of contemporary photography within an architectural context.

Alongside the opening exhibition, a series of public programs will be held on weekends and holidays from May through July. 《Storage Story》 kicks off with a program on May 31 featuring participating artist Jihyun Jung in collaboration with artist Sangmin Park, who worked on the project through a technical partnership. In June, architect Geunjoo Yoon, who designed the museum building, will share stories behind its architecture (June 6).

In July, the program continues with a dialogue-style session on July 5 featuring participating artists Dongsin Seo and Melmel Chung, followed by another session on July 19 with Oh Jooyoung and designer Nayoung Kim, exploring interpretations of artwork and space. On July 26, Won Seoung Won and landscape architect Ji Yeon Kwon will discuss the landscape design process.

In addition, a citizen-participation workshop led by artist Yongseong Joo and Amateur Seoul will run from June to August. These programs offer behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of the exhibition through conversations with the participating artists and their collaborators.
