To
mark its 15th anniversary, Incheon Art Platform is presenting the exhibition “The
Act of Collaboration,” which reflects its accomplishments and significance as a
prominent organization running a residency program in Korea, until February 2.
The
exhibition focuses on the essence of collaboration within the residency
program, exploring the creative activities and processes of artists who have
worked together as teams or engaged in collaborative efforts.
In “The Act of Collaboration,” the artists
investigate various dimensions of collaboration, each revealing unique
approaches. The exhibition highlights three distinct methods of working
together. First, artists in groups, including artist duos and collectives, make
collaboration a fundamental aspect of their creative process. Next, the
exhibition delves into collaborative efforts where artists partner with experts
from diverse fields to tackle complex thematic or technical challenges that
individual artists may find insurmountable.

Finally, the exhibition brings together
artists from different years of residency to explore varied collaborative
structures. These relationships, those rooted in personal connections, invite
artists to approach familiar creative practices from fresh angles, igniting new
sensations. In contrast, two artists who have never collaborated before are
paired to discover new ways of working together, facilitating an exchange of
ideas and sensory experiences that highlights the theme of expanding artistic
exploration.
At the same time as the exhibition, “IAP
Archive (D)” reopens, showcasing collaborations between the Incheon Art
Platform and over 500 artists who have participated in the IAP artist-in-residence
program. This artist archive project aims to reflect on the role and
significance of creative spaces, illuminating the 15-year history of Incheon
Art Platform.

To illuminate the structure and
relationships of these collaborations, the exhibition features a space with
minimal walls, allowing the various works to connect and overlap organically,
enhancing the exhibition's intention. By organizing the exhibition across
exhibition halls, studios, and archives, we aim to showcase the many facets of
contemporary art that defy singular categorization.
Exhibiting art inherently involves a
collaborative process. Artworks do not exist in isolation; they require the
viewer's perspective and interpretation. The exhibition serves as a dialogue,
initiating another layer of collaboration between the artist and the work.
Visitors become the final collaborators, engaging with and interpreting the
artworks in diverse spaces and contributing to the overall experience.
