ONE AND
J. Gallery is holding the group exhibition 《The Second
Skin》 until April 30. This exhibition features five
painters—Choong-Hyun Roh, Dongwook Suh, Dongi Lee, Suejin Chung, and Sooyeon
Hong—who explore the notion of particularity through their respective works.
The
title, “The Second Skin,” originates from the idea that painting, for these
artists, functions as an extension of their bodies, beyond a mere mode of
expression, to reveal their identities. Just as human skin envelops the body,
artists construct an additional layer—another skin—that expresses their inner
selves. This skin can serve as a protective shield or a veil reflecting
external gazes and interpretations.

Through
the distinct pictorial worlds built by these five artists, the exhibition
provides an opportunity for viewers to explore how identity is formed and
transformed.
In
contemporary art, individual narratives are often interpreted within social
discourses and consumed through specific cultural frameworks, sometimes leading
to limited understandings. However, 《The Second Skin》 challenges this discursive structure, demonstrating that painting
is not merely a reflection of societal meanings but rather a process through
which an individual existence constructs its own context.

Art constantly seeks newness. Yet, if an
artist’s work is solely understood within the framework of collective identity,
true originality cannot emerge. This exhibition transcends existing discourses,
illuminating the process through which individuals build their own contexts. 《The Second Skin》 marks the starting point of this journey—an initial step toward
redefining and rediscovering individual particularity.
