Pipe Gallery presents 《Afterglow》, a solo exhibition of works by Jonghwan Jin, on view through April
18.
Jonghwan Jin’s paintings exist between
fleeting moments and lingering impressions, between what fades and what
remains. The artist does not simply capture a specific moment but embodies the
fluid interplay of light and color as they dissolve and transform within the
passage of time. This is akin to an “afterglow”—the residual light that lingers
in the sky long after the sun has set. The subtle echoes of vanishing light and
the indistinct yet undeniable passage of time fill his canvases.

Jonghwan Jin (b.1991)’s practice is not
about depicting landscapes but rather about recording the shifting essence of
light and seasonal transitions through sensory perception. His colors blend and
accumulate in layers, creating surfaces that are both dense and fluid. As wind
leaves its traces and light alters hues at dusk, he visualizes the unseen
changes onto the canvas.
His visual explorations are deeply
connected to nature’s cyclical rhythms, where one season dissolves into the
next, forming an abstract yet tangible threshold of change.

Like an afterglow, his paintings do not
assert themselves through rigid forms but through movement and traces. Light
and color establish themselves within the composition, shifting with the
viewer’s gaze. Jonghwan Jin’s work captures the beauty of impermanence,
uncovering vivid tones and structures within what seems to have disappeared.
His paintings do not freeze a single moment in time but instead invite us to
experience the ceaseless ebb and flow of light and time.
Pipe Gallery’s 《Afterglow》seeks to move beyond mere visual experience, inviting us to
encounter moments where time, memory, and perception converge. Just as the
fading glow of dusk stirs personal recollections, Jonghwan Jin’s paintings
create a space where each viewer’s own sensory memories come to the surface.
