PIBI
Gallery will host Youngjun Lee's solo exhibition, 《Orange Container》, from February 6 to March 15 as the first exhibition of the year.
The
exhibition title, 《Orange Container》, stems from the color
orange, symbolizing sensory perception, and the term “contain,” meaning to hold
or include. Over the past two to three years, the artist has experimented with
various methods of working and aims to encapsulate these approaches in a
single, sensory-rich canvas to firmly establish the direction for future work.
This
solo exhibition will particularly showcase works focusing on the dynamics of
defining and dismantling the boundaries of pictorial space, moving fluidly
between the interior and the exterior.

Youngjun
Lee’s works are characterized by rhythmic hand-free drawings and stencil
pattern drawings, creating a sense of spontaneity and repetition (or
reproducibility) on the canvas, evoking graffiti. While this might appear to
deconstruct norms traditionally associated with painting—such as flatness,
representation, or historical conventions—it simultaneously incorporates layers
of orderly grids and color field abstractions, prompting contemplation of the
intrinsic, transcendent essence of painting.
By
interweaving layers and blending the flow of time, Youngjun Lee invites viewers
to trace the creative process while fostering curiosity. This sense of intrigue
is further heightened by the artist’s decision to present all works in this
exhibition on square-shaped grounds.
Moreover,
rather than adhering to specific points of view or directions to replicate
something or layering for the sake of layering, Lee embraces a process that
balances symmetry, tension, and misalignment. The act of capturing or burying
emergent images within this process becomes the essence of the work itself.

Youngjun
Lee (b. 1983) works between Germany and Korea. In 2023, he began with a solo
