PAGEROOM8
is presenting 《face to face》, a
solo exhibition by artist Im Jihyun, on view through August 30. As part of the
“WELL, THIS WORK8” project series, which typically focuses on a single work by
a mid-career artist to offer an in-depth look into their artistic practice,
this edition takes the exceptional step of inviting Im Jihyun, a young artist
born in 1992.
Over the
past five years, Im’s work has drawn on the vitality found in natural objects
and plants, offering a dramatic sense of the shifts in the artist’s
multifaceted perspectives. In her recent works, with her viewpoint more
actively engaged, abstract forms and intense colors have emerged.

As
plants are observed and magnified, the newly discovered compositions and forms
of the subject are transformed into the medium of painting, becoming connected
to intuitive gestures and attitudes—such as rubbing or pressing against the
canvas, treated as a kind of surface skin. The resulting works take on a system
of meaning conveyed through language, serving both as the titles of the pieces
and as a glimpse into the artist’s concepts.
The images in Im Jihyun’s works, as they
appear at this point in time, have been completed through the artist’s own
series of works over the years and numerous studies. To ensure that this recent
series of works does not dissipate into mere visual fragments, “THIS WORK” has
been selected—embodying the key characteristics found in the latest pieces—in
order to gather the discourses that may arise and to gauge the possible
direction of the artist’s future practice.
